Dr Hawkins qualified from St. George's Hospital Medical School in 1990 after which he trained in general and respiratory medicine in London. Specialist training included posts at St. George's, The Royal Brompton and a three year research fellowship at King's College Hospital which led to the award of a PhD.
A Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Royal Society of Medicine, he is also a member of the British Thoracic Society, previously serving on their Professional Standards Committee. Dr Hawkins is a member of the European Respiratory Society.
